Architectural Design Practice in Melbourne: Insights From SMLXL? and Why Scale Matters
September 2020

As a small architectural design practice in Melbourne, I was recently invited to Parlour and Monash Architecture’s “SMLXL?” session. The discussion explored the opportunities, challenges, and design implications of architectural practice size. The session brought together diverse voices in Australian architecture, including Sonja Syre, Badru Ahmed, and Justine Clark. They shared insights on how practices of varying scales operate and innovate.
During the Q&A, we covered topics such as the benefits and limitations of small, medium, and large practices. We also discussed strategies for maintaining design quality and client relationships at different scales. Additionally, we explored how practice size can influence team culture, project delivery, and professional development. The conversation highlighted opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and experimentation across different practice contexts.
Participating in this session gave me a valuable chance to reflect on my own experiences leading a design practice. I deliver projects across Melbourne and regional Victoria, balancing the creative, technical, and operational demands of architecture at different scales.
