What Is Passive House (Passivhaus)? A Guide to Ultra-Efficient, High-Performance Homes
July 2019
What Is Passive House?
Passive House — or Passivhaus — is an internationally recognised energy standard designed to deliver exceptional comfort, superior indoor air quality, and extremely low heating and cooling demand. Originating from the Passivhaus Institute in Germany, the standard provides a rigorous, science-based framework for designing and constructing buildings that actually perform as intended.

The Role of PHPP
At the heart of Passive House is precise energy modelling using the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP). This tool enables the design team to accurately predict performance and ensure that the building will meet the required criteria before construction begins.
Key Principles of Passive House
Passive House homes rely on a combination of interconnected principles to achieve high performance. They use very high levels of insulation to maintain stable indoor temperatures throughout the year, supported by high-performance windows with insulated frames that reduce heat loss and minimise unwanted solar gain.
An airtight building envelope eliminates draughts and prevents moisture issues, significantly improving overall comfort. Careful detailing ensures construction is free from thermal bridges, avoiding cold spots, condensation, and unnecessary heat loss.
Mechanical Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality
A mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery (MVHR) provides a continuous supply of fresh, filtered air while recovering heat from outgoing air. This ensures consistent comfort, better indoor air quality, and minimal energy use.
A Performance Standard, Not a Style
Passive House is not a design aesthetic; it is a performance benchmark. Whether you are planning a renovation, extension, or new build, it provides a reliable pathway to a healthier, more resilient, and energy-efficient home.
