PROTECT Podcast: Healthy, Climate-Conscious Homes with Passive House

PROTECT is an environmental podcast hosted by design writer Angela Fedele, featuring inspiring stories of sustainability, ocean and animal protection. The show regularly highlights the work of climate change advocates, organisations, and concerned citizens driving meaningful, accountable change. I was recently interviewed on the podcast to discuss healthy, energy-efficient homes and the Passive House (Passivhaus) standard.

The episode, titled “Healthy, Climate Conscious Homes: Introducing Passive House,” explores how homes can be transformed into comfortable, ultra-low energy, and healthy living spaces. A rendering of our Fitzroy project, a deep energy retrofit targeting the Passivhaus Classic standard, illustrates the principles in action. You can listen to the full episode here.

Many homes today perform poorly for both our health and the environment, with high energy consumption, poor indoor air quality, and uncomfortable indoor temperatures. Passive House offers an alternative: bright, airy homes with mild temperatures year-round, reduced energy usage, and healthier living conditions.

As a Passive House designer and director of my own practice, I have spent the last fifteen years delivering residential projects across Melbourne and regional Victoria, including new builds, renovations, extensions, and alterations. On the podcast, I discuss the key design considerations behind Passivhaus, practical strategies for creating energy-efficient, healthy homes, and how we can advocate for better-designed living spaces in Australia.
